Ghana to Procure 200MW Battery Storage

The Government of Ghana has announced plans to procure 200 megawatts (MW) of battery energy storage systems (BESS) to strengthen electricity supply during peak nighttime demand.

Speaking in Parliament, Ghana’s Energy and Green Transition Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor said the projects will be awarded through a competitive procurement process and deployed across the country to inject stored electricity into the national grid during periods of high demand.

According to the minister, the initiative forms part of Ghana’s broader renewable energy and green transition strategy aimed at reducing dependence on expensive thermal power generation and improving grid reliability.

Jinapor noted that Ghana added around 80MW of renewable energy capacity in 2025, mostly from solar, bringing installed solar capacity to roughly 280MW. He also highlighted several ongoing clean energy projects, including:

* A 200MW solar project at Dawa

* A 100MW solar project at Bui

* A 50MW Seno-Asogli solar project

* A 30MW floating solar project by the Volta River Authority

* A planned 200MW solar project paired with a 1,000MWh battery storage system

The minister further disclosed that government is operationalising a Renewable Energy and Green Transition Fund to support renewable energy investments and mobilise domestic financing for clean energy infrastructure.

Beyond power generation, Ghana is also expanding solar-powered irrigation, mini-grids for island communities, solar home systems for off-grid areas, and infrastructure for electric vehicle charging.

The planned battery storage rollout is expected to help Ghana improve grid stability, support renewable energy integration, reduce fuel costs, and advance its target of achieving 99% electrification by 2030 and 50% renewable energy generation by 2060.
