Nigeria: Ogun Govt Launches Cleanup Following Lead Contamination in Ogijo

The Ogun State Government has intensified efforts to address environmental contamination in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area, following concerns over lead pollution linked to Used Lead Acid Battery (ULAB) recycling activities in the community.
The contamination concerns first emerged after reports and community complaints highlighted potential exposure to lead pollutants from battery recycling operations. In response, state authorities shut down several recycling facilities, suspended lead ingot exports, and initiated environmental audits to determine the extent of contamination.
As part of the remediation process, the Ogun State Ministry of Environment has commenced air quality monitoring and environmental assessments across affected areas. The exercise, conducted in collaboration with researchers and environmental agencies, is designed to measure particulate matter, lead-related pollutants, and other environmental indicators that may affect public health.
The government has also launched a comprehensive health audit of residents. More than 500 blood samples have been collected from community members, including children, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and workers in affected industries, to determine blood lead levels and assess potential health impacts. The study is being conducted independently by the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR).
To strengthen oversight and ensure long-term environmental compliance, Ogun State has inaugurated a 15-member Joint Monitoring Committee comprising community representatives, environmental regulators, and other stakeholders. The committee will monitor recycling operations, report environmental concerns, and support remediation efforts within the community.
Environmental regulators have emphasized that battery recycling facilities must comply with strict environmental, health, and safety standards before resuming operations. Previous inspections identified issues including improper battery acid disposal, lead dust emissions, hazardous slag management, and inadequate worker health monitoring.
